Get To Know Your Art

Saturday, Jess and I took a friend up to visit the Metropolitan Museum of Art for one of her class assignments. It was a beautiful day, and I thought perhaps I'd help you through your dull day by giving you some educational distraction.

Let's play Name That Artwork!, a game where I take pictures of rare, beautiful artwork, forget to write down the title or artist, and then you all get to guess all of the details! Whoever gets the most right (right=title and artist correct) in five days gets a free PlasticMind shirt. (See, I'm a patron of the arts.) Leave your answers in the comments here. There are 25 pictures in all, so good luck!

30 April 20071. xpressionccr:

ok...these are the one's I knew...a couple of the other's are really familiar, but I can't figure them out:

#6 A bust of Caesar???

# 7 One of a series of still-lifes including Lemons and that Goblet by William Claesz. Heda (Mid 1600's)

# 8 Rembrandt, Aristotle with a Bust of Homer (mid 1600's)

#9 Pannini's Rome Gallery (mid 1700's)

#11 Its 14th century, its Madonna and Child with Saints, or something similar...maybe Duccio???

#12 Rafael, Madonna and Child Enthroned with Saints (early 1500's)

#14 Gentileschi, Esther before Ahasuerus (early 1600's)

#15 Caravaggio's, the Lute Player (1590's) uh...it's a lute.

#19 That is Salvador Dali, but I don't know the name of the piece...but it would be 1950'sish.

# 21and #23 (it's repeated) Jacques-Louis David, The Death of Socrates (Late 1700's)

30 April 20072. crystal:

I'm not going to try to guess. I just want to say that I'm extremely jealous.

1 May 20073. xpressionccr:

on #22...were there people in the painting? The fabric looks like something that Carlo Dolci would have painted (he was amazing with details like that). If it is Dolci then it would be Mid 1600's, but I am taking a shot in the dark there.

And, #24 looks like El Greco...which would place it around the late 1500's, but I'm not sure. It has that dark and grayish-ness to it, and the long line, but it isn't as graphic in style as I think it should be. Arg.

As, you can tell, you have hit an OCD nerve with me here.

1 May 20074. xpressionccr:

Ok...so I must really want this T-shirt.

I looked in a coffee table art book that I have at home. I knew it had # 18 in there. That is Portrait of Guillaum Bude by Clouet (Early to Mid 1500's).

Wow!

Ladies and gentleman, you decide. Chris and Chuck: overachievers or obsessive compulsive?!

I'm going to tally the score and award points tomorrow. (And of course I expect the winners to take a picture of themselves in their new prize.) Good work, everyone! Group hug!
