Pineapple Upside-down Me
It's Sunday afternoon.
You know what that means.
Sunday afternoon, my body shuts down. I try hard to engage in meaningful conversation, but I find myself fading. Wide-opened-eyed, blinking back sleep, staring like a zombie at this person I care about who is starting to sound alot like Charlie Brown's teacher. *WAH WAH, WAH WAH, WAH WAH WAH* I nearly fell asleep while praying for my chicken parm, that's how bad it is. The heat of the day transforms me into a sloth.
Weekdays are just as bad. Early morning is time for putzing with news and all the latest. Lunch is nothing but a distraction from distractions. Then it's hours of building up momentum until 5pm rolls around and I'm starting to get productive and what happens? My wife gets home and I jump off the "get-things-done" train for some relationship building.
Then the blessed night comes. I'm laying in bed and my body is electrified with activity. The hamster of ideas is running circles in my head, squeaking louder in my brain than the springs of my mattress as I toss and turn. If I get up and indulge the hamster, from 11pm to 3am I am a todo list checking fool. We're talking old-cartoon-dust-cloud-of-fists-and-feet productivity.
Can someone please tell me why I sleep so well during the day and work so well at night? (I'm sure if I can figure this out it will explain why I did so poorly at college where I had to be in bed an hour or so before I got productive.)

Sounds like a tough problem. Are you sleepy because you were up most of the night engaged in old-cartoon-dust-clouds? Can you retrain your body? I can't relate at all because I'm normally fighting staying awake around 10:00. I feel like such an old woman sometimes.

hey, for some reason i couldn't get to your site the other day and i just wanted to tell you thanks for your comment on my site...it was very encouraging...
i totally identify with the odd sleepy times...unfortunately, i just can't give in to my impulse to hop out of bed and clean all of my closets otherwise i will be even more sleepy the next day!
can't wait 'til i don't have to work 40 hours anymore! even so come quickly part time...

Um.... isn't it obvious? You're living on the wrong half of the planet...
21 August 20065. Marlo:
Yes I totally relate- I've always been the same way. I might have trained Todd now, because on vacation we stayed up late and slept in- which he normally would never do. So that's all you've got to do- train your better half. :)
21 August 20066. Jesse Gardner:
Mark: Best explanation yet.
Marlo: My better half doesn't like either end.
21 August 20067. Keith:
I'm the same way. I think I'm more productive at night because no one can expect anything of me. Everything is bonus. I'm free to do whatever I'm in the mood to do, and I do more when I like what I do.
There is, likely, some rebellion mixed in, too. We are to do all our work in six DAYS, and rest at night and on the sabbath. So working when I'm supposed to rest, and resting when I'm supposed to work is a manifestation of my sin nature.

ryc: I didn't really drink until a few months ago- couldn't stand the taste- but somehow with little sips from time to time I now like the stuff. But the Baptist upbringing still stalks my mind most of the time. This is a good thing, though, because I'm terrified of getting drunk and never have been.
I thought I heard you talk about good beer before? So...do you not drink for religious reasons or were you kidding?
25 August 20069. Jonathan:
You know what Ben Franklin said right Marlo?
"Beer is proof that God loves us and wants us to be happy."
(at least I own a t-shirt that says that....)

I SO feel yer pain -- I'm a night person, too - in the extreme. And it's very hard to be a night person in a daytime world! I usually DRAAAAAAAGGGGG thru the day, only semi-coherent, just trying to make it thru so I can get some sleep at a reasonable hour, like 9:00... but 9:00 comes along, and *SPROING!!!!!* I'm WIDE WIDE WIDE awake and full of energy!!! Ack! Kinda ridiculous, LOL... but I guess that's the way God wired me, for some unknown reason. :)~
