The Golden Compass

Can anyone tell me more about this movie, or the book it's based on? The LoTR lift is silly, but the rest of the movie looks stunning:

Hi-res version here.

UPDATE: I bought the book and I'm about half-way through. I'll write up a brief review when I'm finished.

I don't know anything about it, but now I want to watch it. (I'm a sucker for movie trailers)

It's based on Philip Pullman's His Dark Materials triology. As far as I understand, it is a very well-written trilogy, but has the express purpose of debunking the existence of God through the novels. It of a a "We have seen god and he is us" kind of deal as I understand it. What I don't know is whether that idea is so in-your-face that the films will not be enjoyable. I haven't read the books, myself, but I have read a lot about them because I'm fascinated wtih them, yet hesitant to read them. The hesitancy due to not knowing how pushy the foundational philosophy might happen to be.

And yes, I did proofread that. You know it's Friday when you proofread and still leave the phrase "It of a a" in your comment. It should be "It's kind of a..." :}

I have read it! I don't do fantasy and was tricked by a friend into reading the first book and ended up reading the whole series. Some of the concepts in the book are fascinating. For example, each person's soul is personified by an animal/spirit called a daemon that cannot be separated from the person. Also, there are parallel universes that people have found different ways to access. The anti-God concepts were not at all clear until the final book. I love Nicole Kidman, and I think the costumes designs are so cool! I am excited to see it. Thanks for posting the trailer.

Oh, and I love Iorek Byrnison, the polar bear character. He's reallly cool. I hope the talking animals don't come across cheesy in the movie.

YourThoughts?
