Would Jesus Care About The Cake?

“The poor you have with you always…” Matthew 26:11

I must have missed the “always” somewhere in previous readings. But they came back today. Yeah, the couple living on disability I wrote about last year who were sleeping on benches and needed food and money. They scared me out of an email-induced stupor when they banged on my office window, calling me father and asking me to open the door.

Turns out they were in a tight spot again. With suitcases in tow, they told me how they were kicked out of their motel room today because their disability check didn’t get deposited until midnight tonight. They needed food, something warm to drink and enough money to stay one more night at the hotel. I brewed up some coffee, gave them a plastic bag full of food and drink leftover from our New Year’s celebration and, while they ate, talked to them a while about getting out of this cycle of poverty. They really didn’t want an apartment, they just wanted a cheaper motel.

Finally, I told them I had to go out and get my car and that they should meet me out the side door near the kitchen where I gave them food. I pulled around and began to load their bags into the trunk. As I did, I noticed the bag I had given them with food was much larger than when I had handed it to them. I opened it and there, with all of the food I had given them, was a cake they had stolen off the counter in the church kitchen. I laughed out loud in disbelief.

Immediately, she began to explain how that her husband must have thought I meant that he could take the cake when I said I’d give them food. Completely lame, but I didn’t say anything, I just helped them into the car and got in without a word. The entire way to the motel, she kept trying to convince me that it was a misunderstanding and when I didn’t respond she began to explain that they’d be coming out to church soon. They told me this the last few times they’d been here. So I reminded them that I don’t give them food so that they’ll come out to church, I give them food because I care about them and don’t want them to suffer. But at what point should you let people experience the consequences of their frequent, willful behavior?

In their hotel room, I had a hard time praying for them. Kevin Dear once told me that I shouldn’t say anything I don’t mean when I’m praying, so I was struggling for words. God please help these people help themselves? God please get them so dissatisfied with living this way that they’ll change? God please help me to love the unlovely?

Before I left, I told them rather candidly: “About the cake. If you really wanted it, all you had to do was ask. I gave you so much food and yet you felt like you had to steal the cake?” They again assured me that it was just a misunderstanding, and I went away feeling very cynical. I can’t help but wondering: would Jesus have cared about the cake?

I can't say whether Jesus would have "cared about the cake." But the actions of these two are not all that surprising, are they? God gave us love and the marriage bed, we said "great, how about one-night-stands!" He gave us adrenaline, we said "too boring, how about some drugs!" He gave us his Word, we said "interesting, but lets do Tom Clancy and JJ Abrams." (Okay, maybe too far on that one.) My point is that when there is no understanding of our central purpose (to glorify God and love him forever), it's all about me. We're never thankful enough for what we're given, we always want more.

Swell, though, giving them the food. And the cake. And it sounds like your measured response might speak more of the Gospel than a righteous tirade about the ten commandments.

I don't think Jesus ever cared about the cake, He simply used such situations as opportunities to teach. Sounds like you did just that. I think of Jesus as gentle but never naive. When He came across folks who were manipulative, He did not spare the truth. He challenged them with questions--He left them with ideas to contemplate. It was up to them to come to terms with their encounter.

I think the appropriate prayer in this case is for the wisdom to know how best to help these people and others like them in the future. At times, the best thing to do is what you did today - give them food and let them eat cake (hah, couldn't resist that one), but it also could be that the best thing to do is allow them to feel the real consequences of their choices, express confidence that they can make better ones, and withhold help enough that they begin to stand on their own.

As human beings who are commanded to love one another, I think it's instructive that God, who is our perfect example of love, placed us on this Earth with rich resources, beauty, etc., and then told us that by the sweat of our brow we would eat our bread. Work, struggle, and toil are all necessary parts of life, and help us to develop character.

I believe that with study and prayer, God will reveal His will to you about these people and others you may run across in your daily life, and give you the strength and love to see that will through. Good luck!
